I was easily able to watch videos and read other websites while fishing. I took 26 minutes and 24 seconds to reach that point. Technically, while you can fish pretty quickly, you’ll mostly catch the same fish and junk items until you find a spirit who will upgrade your fishing equipment. You need to get your ship, and that’s pretty much it! It took me 2 minutes and 32 seconds from the end of the opening cutscene to being able to fish. I almost always had that option on after about halfway through the game, as it made it more relaxing to just sit down and fish. travel while ignoring the events on the map along the way. I forgot when it happens, but you eventually get an option to “safe-travel”, i.e. Plus, if you’re actually interested in playing the game for non-fishing reasons, there’s tons of chores to do on the ship to pass the time. There’s still a decent amount of sailing involved, and I think fishing is one of the activities that’s meant to make it less boring. If you are like me, and have horrible flashbacks of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and the seemingly endless sailing involved whenever you see sailing in a game, fear not, as there are bus stops around the map which allow you to quick travel between them. However, even if you hook the tuna, if the line snaps, you can still catch it again). Different areas have different fish that are specific to them, and there are specific tuna fishing locations (that will have one tuna in it. You can fish anywhere, as long as you’re on your boat. If the fish gets too far away (the left side of the screen), the line will snap and you’ll lose it. That seemed counter-intuitive to me.Ĭatching a fish requires you to reel until it’s near your ship (roughtly where the fish is in the screenshot below). When it’s red, you can spam the E button to stop the fish from swimming too far away. In fact, if you do so, you won’t be able to catch tuna. However, just because the rod is red, doesn’t mean you need to stop reeling completely. I can’t find a version number, but I played the Farewell Edition, which the devs have said is their last content update. Most of the spirits didn’t impact me very much, but there were two that felt like an emotional sucker punch. The game is fairly light-hearted for the most part, but as you would expect given the subject matter, it has many sombre moments. I’m fairly mediocre at platforming games, and while there were a couple of tricky parts, I was able to finish the game. You’ll also need to build houses for them and feed them. While the spirits are on your boat, they’ll give you quests to complete. You play as Stella, a new Spiritfarer whose job it is to ferry spirits to the Everdoor and help them move on. There’s also a demo of the game available on Steam (and possibly the consoles, too). ![]() ![]() ![]() It’s available on Steam, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. I got it on sale for A$21.47 ( IsThereAnyDeal link), full price on Steam is A$42.95. Spiritfarer is an action platformer game, with some management simulation sprinkled on top, created by Thunder Lotus Games. I like how there’s no need to do anything in order to fish, like gather bait or craft rods. I think I’ll have it on my list of games to play when I just want some mindless chill time. It did start to get a bit stale towards the middle of the game, so I don’t think it’s a game you could fish in for hours at a time. I found fishing in this game to be quite relaxing. Note: I’ve tried my best to keep this review relatively spoiler-free, but there are a few vague mentions which are minor spoilers. ![]() As a reminder, what I’m looking for while reviewing is in a previous blog post, which you can find here:
